La terre n’a pas tremblé le jour où Nelson Mendela est devenu président de la République Sud-Africaine, tournant définitivement le dos à toute forme officielle d’apartheid, et sans que personne ne s’inquiète de la possession par cet Etat de l’arme atomique.

La terre n’a pas tremblé le jour où Barack Obama est devenu président des Etats-Unis d’Amérique, première puissance industrielle et militaire du monde.

...la terre ne tremblera pas si un Palestinien devient un jour président du Grand Israël.

Ce jour-là au contraire, ce sera une belle victoire de la démocratie et le monde aura fait un immense pas vers la paix.

Si les troubles actuels ne dégénèrent pas en troisième guerre mondiale. Si les intérêts du complexe militaro-industriel ne l’emportent pas sur l’aspiration naturelle des peuples à vivre en paix, ils offrent au contraire une formidable opportunité de remodeler la poudrière engendrée par la création de l’Etat d’Israël et d’en faire au contraire un modèle de cohabitation pacifique de communautés religieuses différentes qui ont toutes droit à l’existence et qui auraient enfin appris à se respecter mutuellement, sous l’oeil débonnaire d’un gendarme du monde qui serait enfin devenu réellement équitable.

From a moral perspective, however – and, fortunately, that’s the dominant perspective among the e-crowd, Jewish and non-Jewish, with whom I associate – supporting the Egyptian revolution is a no-brainer. On the one hand we have a regime that has only become more authoritarian in recent years, and, on the other, non-violent protesters from all walks of life who are struggling to be free. How can any decent human being not be thrilled by the prospect of this liberation ? And how can Jews, who themselves came into being as nation in the furnace of Egyptian bondage, not identify with the Egyptian struggle for freedom ?

In fact, I would argue that the ambivalence that some Jews are feeling can itself be turned into an argument against a Jewish state. For if the price to pay for a Jewish state is acquiescing in tyranny and injustice for reasons of realpolitik– as Israel did with apartheid South Africa – then arguably that price is too high, especially if you feel, as I do, that there are alternatives to a Jewish state for the survival and thriving of the Jewish people and its heritage.
